BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) AND BRT (Bushfire Resistant Timber)

Often times in Victoria when building or renovating you will have to use BAL rated timber. Your builder or draftsmen can let you know what BAL level your timber cladding is required to be. The highest BAL that timber can achieve is BAL 29.  The following timber species achieve BAL 29. BLACKBUTT, MERBAU, RED IRONBARK, SILVERTOP ASH, SPOTTED GUM, TURPENTINE.

Internal Lining/Cladding

All of the species mentioned below are suitable for internal lining. Most lining boards are manufactured in a thinner board 12-14mm not the traditional 19mm. internal lining boards also incorporate other non-durable species including Pine, Tasmanian Oak and Victorian Ash, being amongst the more popular.

Cedar Cladding

Extremely durable and lightweight cedar is used both externally and internally. It is one of the most popular and stable claddings available. 133mm x 18mm – Shiplap 84mm x 18mm – Shiplap 181mm x 18mm – Shiplap 84mm x 18mm – V Jointed 133mm x 18mm – V Jointed 133mm x 18mm – Sawn Face Shiplap (Tight Knotty)

Silver Top Ash

Predominately a blonde timber with lots of feature this cladding is both durable and affordable. Grown in Victoria this species is extremely popular. 127mm x 22mm – Shiplap Dressed 127mm x 19mm – Sawn Shiplap

Ironbark

Generally a mix between red and grey ironbark this species is generally a reddish colour with some darker and lighter boards. As the name suggests it is an extremely hardwearing and durable timber. 122mm x 19mm – Shiplap

Blackbutt

Another blonde timber this is extremely durable and one of the most popular claddings used today. The neutral colour is often ideal for staining. 122mm x 19mm – Shiplap

Merbau

A deep red colour with high durability this timber species goes really well matched in with decking. 126mm x 19mm – Shiplap (Finger Jointed 5.7)

LOSP Treated Pine

Pre primed treated pine is stable affordable and ideal for painting. The LOSP treatment is completely safe too handle and the boards are light and easy to install. 138mm x 19mm – Primed Shiplap 138mm x 19mm – Primed Shiplap (Sawn Face)

Lunawood

Thermally modified Nordic Redwood, this cladding is exceptionally durable light and stable. 108mm x 19mm – Shiplap (Baltic) 127mm x 19mm Bombora LunaWood Profile (H3 Baltic)

Primed Baltic Weatherboards

The industry standard for as long as anyone can remember Baltic pine weatherboards are as popular now as they have ever been. 175.0mm – Square Edge (horizontal only) 175.0mm – Round Edge (horizontal only)

Cypress Pine

An attractive and affordable cladding option. 122 x19 Shiplap

Spotted Gum

The Rolls Royce of cladding this species is by far one of the most popular. Its colour ranges from light earthy tones to dark reds and browns (often in one board.) It is extremely hard wearing and one of the most popular timber species for a reason. 122mm x 19mm – Shiplap

Cambia Ash

Thermally modified American Ash is ideal if you are looking for a dark lightweight cladding that doesn’t need to be stained. 120mm x 19mm – Shiplap

Accoya

Light weight and extremely durable. Very light in colour and exceptionally stable.
